Things people cut back

April 7th, 2008 at 12:51 am

DH and I went to IHOP for breakfast yesterday.

He tells me that he has been thinking about what people have been cut back due to this bad economy, and which store would go down. (btw, he is not much of saver.)

I told him people are eating out less. I can tell by the promotion restaurants offer. For example, I had a coupon for IHOP, good for any day of the week. I could not find an IHOP coupon good for any day before. It was only good for Mon - Fri, not valid on weekend. Now, they're giving out coupons that are good on weekend as well.

We tried to think of some other things, but couldn't think of much since our spending pattern hasn't changed much and couldn't tell from our own experience.

Can you think of anything?

Well, around here all of the furniture stores are going out of business too.

I hear you though - we have been eating out way more - the coupons are noticeably more lucrative of late. We have been swinging $10 all-you can-eat for 2 at lunch time so enjoying. But we ate at IHOP with a good coupon last weekend (one usually reserved for week days).

We have a few furniture stores going out of business. Retail sales in our area are down a little but not enough to cause anyone to panic yet. DH and I were talking about restaurant coupons tonight. We rarely see them here but I'd sure like to!

I manage a grocery store and I've noticed that with the rising gas prices we are having to raise our prices. The departments that seem to be affected the most are produce and milk. However frozen sells have shot up. I think people are cutting back on fresh items and substituting frozen ones which are cheaper.

That's interesting how people are cutting back fresh items, and going for frozen. I've never thought of that.

I agree about furniture stores. Business was good when all there new homes were built around here. I wonder if any repair business is going to do well???

I would think that repair business's will do well because a lot of people aren't moving and are staying where they are. My husband is in that business and is seeing alot more remodeling and repair jobs now.

I live in an area where the recession forces really aren't apparent yet. I've posted about that before. Stores are opening all over the place, new stores, remodels, expansions, new restaurants, etc. Construction every where you look. And the stores and restaurants are crowded with shoppers and diners. I really haven't seen any sign of people cutting back.
